Transportation - Last Resort Karamea

How do you get to the Last Resort? The Journey State Highway 67 runs up the coast from Westport via Granity, through some beautiful coastal scenery to the Mokihinui River. Passing over the river the road begins to climb up the Karamea Bluff to reach a high point of 420m. It then descends slowly through mixed rata/kamahi bush through which you can catch occasional glimpses of Mt Domett (1646rn) and surrounding ranges. Shortly after leaving the hills the road crosses the Little Wanganui River (where many trampers turn right for the Wangapeka Track). The road turns once again towards the sea passing through Little Wanganui and 15km further along the coast you arrive in Karamea. Walking Well, you can walk... the Last Resort serves the southern end of the Heaphy Track. One of the finest walks in the northern part of the South Island. If this doesn't appeal to you, or if you want to save your energy for fly fishing or one of the other exciting adventures available at the Last Resort then you may want to drive here or for those coming from further afield then you can fly in and be fishing on the day you arrive. Travelling by car By car on SH 67 to Mokihinui, then Mokihinui Karamea Highway to Karamea. Fully sealed road with fuel stops at Westport and Karamea. (Hours vary on weekends). Passenger Service A passenger service runs Monday to Friday from Karamea to Westport, and returns Westport to Karamea, connecting with all other bus services to Nelson, Greymouth, and Hokitika, and Christchurch. See Southern Link Kbus for timetables and pricing. Flight Flight Services are available between Karamea, Nelson and Takaka. We recommend you contact Flight Corporation for additional information.
